The History

KOMA-Script is a collection of LaTeX classes and packages. The project began in 1992, a few months before the initial release of LaTeX2e, with the goal of converting the Script2 LaTeX2.09 styles into classes and packages. The first release was in 1993.

Over the years, not only did more and more functionality get added to the KOMA-Script classes, but more and more packages also emerged within the collection and its ecosystem. Even though there were occasionally contributors who helped out for a while by contributing parts of the documentation or even the initial letter class, KOMA-Script essentially always remained a one-man show.

Part of the KOMA-Script project was once the “KOMA-Script Documentation Project,” also known as komascript.de. The whole thing was originally launched and funded by Robin Kroha using Zope, one of the earliest content management systems. The idea was, on the one hand, to make documentation—and especially examples—available online beyond the actual user manual. Furthermore, long before GitHub, Codeberg, etc., it was intended to serve as a support hub. At the time, it was one of the very first German-language LaTeX forums. Eventually, the entire project was migrated to Drupal.

Unfortunately, the idea of spreading the workload of the “KOMA-Script Documentation Project” across as many people as possible didn’t really work out. While there were, at times, a number of very active contributors in the forum, the administrative burden increased due to spam and attacks on the site. This led to the KOMA-Script author increasingly becoming, for all intents and purposes, the komascript.de administrator.

As a result, komascript.de was closed to community authors and articles, and was maintained solely for a few publications by the KOMA-Script author. Gradually, content worth preserving was transferred to the KOMA-Script Wiki on SourceForge, where it is available in both German and English. However, a small amount of content remained on komascript.de. However, maintaining a complex system like Drupal solely for this content did not make sense. Therefore, in 2026, the KOMA-Script author began looking for a lean system, preferably with static pages that are difficult to attack. This is exactly what you will find here.

The Present

Since 2018, there has been an effort to split the KOMA-Script collections into smaller projects. The main purpose of this is to break down the enormous complexity of the overall project into individual, less complex parts, thereby enabling the work to be distributed among several people in the medium to long term.

The Mission

The purpose of this site is to provide information about certain aspects of KOMA-Script and my—KOMA’s—other projects. The whole thing has more of a blog-like character than a wiki. In addition, there are also drafts and collections of ideas. The fact that these cannot simply be publicly commented on by anyone here is part of the concept. But of course, I am always available on Mastodon, at the familiar KOMA-Script email address, and via the issue pages of the individual projects.
